Narrow streets and a church steeple rising above the rooftops make this view of Havana's old colonial core, where the city was first laid out after its founding in 1519. Cuba had become an independent republic in 1902, and by the 1910s American visitors, businesses and tourists were a growing presence in Havana, which fueled a market for picture postcards and printed views like this one. The U.S. Copyright Office notation shows the image was registered for copyright, which is why a copy survives in the Library of Congress. The print is a useful record of how the old city's streets and churches looked to outsiders in the years around World War I.
