A sculpture and an open plaza set this Havana view apart, with the street life of the city filling the space around them. The picture dates to about 1903, a few years after Cuba became a republic in May 1902, following the Spanish-American War and a period of U.S. military administration. Views of Havana like this one circulated among American audiences curious about the island, and the copyright registration noted on the print shows it was entered for protection as a published image. The figures moving through the square and the monument at its center offer a useful look at how public space was used in the island's early republican years.
