Few wrecks carry as much weight in American memory as the battleship *Maine*, pictured here in Havana harbor. The ship exploded on the night of February 15, 1898, killing 260 of its crew, and the blast became a rallying cry in the rush to war with Spain that spring. The wreck stayed in the harbor for years afterward, and this cyanotype, made around 1901, records that long afterlife in a process better known for blueprints than for news pictures. Its blue-white tones give the scene an unusually stark, ghostly quality.
