Here the subject is the wreckage of the USS Maine in Havana harbor, the American battleship that exploded and sank there on February 15, 1898, killing more than 250 of the crew. The cause of the blast was never settled at the time, but it fed the rising tension between the United States and Spain and helped push the two countries into the Spanish-American War later that spring. By around 1900, when this print was made, the ship's broken remains were a well-known landmark for visitors to the harbor. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many of its views for sale to tourists, issued this scene as part of its broader series of American and foreign locations.
