The wreck of the battleship *Maine*, raised from Havana Harbor around 1911, closes a long chapter in the ship's story. The vessel blew up at its moorings on February 15, 1898, killing more than 250 American sailors and helping push the United States toward war with Spain that spring. For more than a decade the wreck lay in the harbor as a hazard to shipping and a reminder of the explosion, until salvage crews brought it up. The twisted metal in the photograph hints at the damage that fueled the debate over the blast's cause, a question that was never fully settled.
