The battleship *Maine* lay broken in Havana Harbor when this print was made in March 1899, roughly a year after an explosion tore through her forward section on February 15, 1898, killing 260 American sailors. The blast helped push the United States toward war with Spain, and the Spanish-American War began that April. The ship's twisted hull and superstructure, still in the water and visible above the surface, made the wreck a lasting symbol of the conflict. Its cause was never settled to everyone's satisfaction, and the wreck was not raised until 1911 and 1912.
