Fraternity Park, or Parque de la Fraternidad, sits in the heart of Havana near the Capitol, and this view was made for the Cuban Tourist Commission around 1950, when the city was drawing many visitors from the United States. The park's name refers to the spirit of hemispheric friendship that Havana promoted at Pan-American gatherings, and its shaded paths and monuments made it a favorite stop for tourists. The Commission's catalog number suggests the print was one of a series used to present the city as a welcoming destination. Photographs like this one show how Havana framed its public spaces for outside audiences in the decade before the 1959 revolution changed the city.
