La Concha beach sits on the Atlantic side of Havana, a stretch of sand that by the early 1950s was one of the city's most popular spots for swimming and sunbathing. Tourism was booming in Cuba at that time, and the Cuban Tourist Commission promoted images like this one to draw visitors from the United States and elsewhere. Most of the beachgoers in these promotional scenes came from Havana's middle and upper classes, who had access to the cars and clubs that lined the nearby coast. The print is worth a close look for what it reveals about how the island presented itself to the world before the Revolution transformed its economy and its tourist trade.
