The sea attack on San Juan, Puerto Rico, which Rear Admiral William T. Sampson led against the Spanish fortifications in May 1898, is the event this color print depicts. The U.S. Navy's bombardment of the harbor defenses, including Morro Castle, drew wide newspaper attention during the Spanish-American War, and the attack did little lasting damage to the forts. Muller, Luchsinger & Co. of New York issued this chromolithograph around 1898, when inexpensive colored prints of current events sold well to a public eager for war news. Its bright, dramatic rendering of warships under fire shows how commercial printers turned the conflict into popular imagery.
