Staged as an allegory, this stereograph names the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Cuba in its title and presents them as a load carried by Uncle Sam. The Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, published it around 1899, while the terms of the Spanish-American War were still being settled. The title echoes Rudyard Kipling's 1899 poem "The White Man's Burden," which framed imperial rule as a duty. Cards like this one, sold for viewing through stereoscopes in parlors, helped bring the new overseas possessions into ordinary American households as a moral argument.
