The setting is Pinar del Rio, the westernmost province of Cuba, and this stereo card shows a company of the Cuban army there. Published in New York by Strohmeyer & Wyman around 1899, it was one of many views made for the stereoscope, which let American viewers at home see distant places and the recent war in apparent three dimensions. Cuban fighters had resisted Spanish rule for decades, and in 1898 they fought alongside United States forces in the campaign that ended Spanish control of the island. The card offers a glimpse of those soldiers as the American public of the period was invited to see them.
