The place named here is Pinar del Rio, Cuba's westernmost province, where this stereograph shows Cubans waiting in their trenches for Spanish troops. The caption is unverified, but it points to the Spanish-American War, when Cuban insurgents fought Spanish rule alongside United States forces. Strohmeyer & Wyman, a New York firm, issued the card in a numbered series of stereo views, meant to be seen through a lens for a three-dimensional effect. Such cards brought distant war into American parlors, and this one reminds viewers that Cuban fighters were central to the conflict.
