Few pictures from the Spanish-American War show the fighting as this stereograph does: Cuban insurgent soldiers crouched in a dug-in position at Pinar del Río, waiting for Spanish troops to come into range. The card was issued in New York around 1899 by Strohmeyer & Wyman and sold through Underwood & Underwood, firms that turned war views into popular parlor entertainment. Viewed through a stereoscope, the trench gives a sense of depth that a flat photograph cannot, though the scene was likely staged for the camera, as many war views of the period were. Pinar del Río, at the western tip of Cuba, was one of the regions where the rebellion against Spanish rule was fought in the years before 1898.
