This color lithograph, printed in New York around 1896, brings together Máximo Gómez, Antonio Maceo, José Martí, Calixto García and Salvador Cisneros under the title "Cuba's heroes and their flag." It was issued as a souvenir of the Grand Cuban-American Fair, a sign of the New York Cuban exile community's support for the independence war that began in 1895. Martí, the movement's writer and organizer, died in battle that same year, and Maceo was killed in 1896, so by the time the print appeared, the men pictured were becoming symbols as much as commanders. Pairing their likenesses with the flag reflects how the cause was promoted to Cubans and sympathetic Americans alike.
