Cuban fighters dug these trenches in Pinar del Rio, the westernmost province of Cuba, and this stereograph shows them waiting for Spanish troops to approach. The card was issued by Strohmeyer & Wyman, a New York publisher of stereoscopic views whose paired images were meant to be seen through a stereoscope at home. It dates to about 1899, just after the 1898 war between the United States and Spain that ended Spanish rule in Cuba, so its subject reflects a conflict still fresh in American minds. The caption details come from an old card and have not been independently verified, so the scene is best read as a period record rather than a precise account of one moment.
