The title calls this a "remnant of the Cuban army," and the record places it at Manzanillo, a port on Cuba's southern coast, though the cataloguer noted the location may be the Granma province town spelled differently. Around 1900, Cuba's independence forces, which had fought Spain through the late 1890s, were being demobilized under American occupation, so the word "remnant" likely refers to men left over from that struggle. The card was published by M. H. Zahner of Niagara Falls, New York, one of the many firms that sold inexpensive stereographs to a public eager for images of the newly prominent island.
