Guanabacoa, a town just east of Havana, is the setting for this stereograph of soldiers, a pairing of two nearly identical photographs that gave a three-dimensional view when seen through a stereoscope. It was made and published by B.W. Kilburn of Littleton, New Hampshire, around 1899, a year after the United States and Spain fought the Spanish-American War, which ended Spanish rule in Cuba. Kilburn's firm sold such cards by the thousands to American households and schools, so the image reflects how many Americans first saw the island and its occupation. The card's subject line ties the soldiers to that war, making it a record of the military presence that followed the conflict.
