Villa Clara, the central Cuban province named in this stereograph's title, was one of the regions where rebel fighters operated during the island's independence struggle. The Cuban War of Independence, which began in 1895, pitted insurgent forces against Spanish colonial troops, and it drew growing American attention until the Spanish-American War of 1898 brought the United States into the conflict. The card was issued by the New York firm Strohmeyer & Wyman and sold through Underwood & Underwood, companies that supplied stereoviews for home viewers who could see these fighters in three dimensions. Today it offers a glimpse of how the war was packaged for American audiences.
