Dedicated on March 30, 1930, this photograph records the opening of the Palace of Justice in Santa Clara, the capital of the Villa Clara province in central Cuba. The print was issued by the Secretaría de Obras Públicas, the public works ministry, and appeared in its official publication *Actualidad Oficial*, which was captioned in Spanish. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, the government of President Gerardo Machado promoted major public building projects, and ceremonies like this one presented new courthouses and civic buildings as signs of national progress. The image later entered the Pan American Union collection, now held by the Library of Congress.
