The photograph shows the land side of the Havana Yacht Club, the face of the clubhouse that looks inland rather than out over the water, which is the side most visitors would have approached by road. Havana's yacht clubs were social centers for the city's wealthier families, where members gathered for regattas, dinners, and dances along the Gulf of Mexico coast. The Pan American Union assembled photographs like this one of Latin American cities between 1920 and 1950 to document architecture and public life across the hemisphere. Pictures of the building's landward side are useful for seeing how such clubs presented themselves to the street.
