The gardens of the University of Havana, photographed here in October 1929, are the particular subject of this view, which shows only part of the grounds rather than the whole campus. The university traces its origins to 1728, when the Royal and Pontifical University of San Gerónimo was founded in Havana, making it one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the Americas. By the late 1920s the campus was a focal point of Cuban public life, and the Spanish caption and the Secretaría de Obras Públicas credit point to the government's interest in documenting its public buildings during that period.
