The School of Engineering at the University of Havana is the particular subject here, a campus building photographed in February 1930 and credited to the Secretaría de Obras Públicas, the Cuban government's public works office. The University of Havana, founded in 1728, is the oldest university in Cuba and one of the oldest in the Americas, and by 1930 its colleges had grown well beyond the colonial-era core near Old Havana. The record preserves a documentary view of the institution's physical plant during the presidency of Gerardo Machado, when public works building was a visible sign of state investment in education. Its value lies in showing how a long-established academic institution was housed and presented at that moment.
