The building in this view is the Presidential Palace in Havana, the official residence and office of Cuba's presidents. It was built between 1913 and 1920 in a grand Beaux-Arts style, with marble staircases, large halls, and a broad facade meant to signal the young republic's stability. Photographs of such buildings were often gathered by the Pan American Union, which collected images of member nations' capitals and government landmarks. The palace later became the Museum of the Revolution after 1959.
