The fight was one of the opening actions of the American campaign against Santiago de Cuba, launched the same morning as the advance toward San Juan Hill. The image is a wood engraving after a drawing by W.J. Glackens, who later became a leading figure of the Ashcan School of painting. It ran in *McClure's Magazine* in October 1898, showing how readers in 1898 followed the war through illustrated periodicals.
