Rather than a Caribbean scene, this stereograph reproduces a Civil War sketch drawn by an officer aboard the Union gunboat *Mahaska*, showing infantry burning the house of a Confederate named Ruffin under the gunboat's guns. The title also records the loss of the Pacific Mail steamer *Golden Gate* by fire at sea in July 1862, an event that drew wide notice. Underwood & Underwood, the New York firm that issued the card around 1903, made stereo views for sale to households and schools, so this is a later photographic copy of an earlier drawing, not an eyewitness photograph. The Cuba heading does not match the content, so the title is the better guide to the subject.
