The gate of the Custom House in Havana is the subject here, a point where goods arriving at the city's harbor came under official inspection. The record dates the photograph only tentatively to 1899 and credits Ernest C. Rost of New York as its maker. Those years followed the Spanish-American War, when the United States occupied Cuba and American officials took over the island's customs administration. Because import duties were a major source of government revenue, the building sat at the center of that transition, and a picture of its entrance shows a moment when control of the island's affairs was changing hands.
