The first raising of the American flag by Marines on Cuban soil took place at Guantánamo Bay on June 11, 1898, when Marines from the fleet went ashore to secure a coaling station for the Navy. This color print, issued by the Werner Company of Akron, Ohio, commemorates that moment and credits the Navy for the landing. Popular color prints like this one were sold widely during the Spanish-American War, bringing images of the conflict into homes across the country.
