Lines of men waiting for physicals in Miami on April 17, 1961, capture a moment when the Bay of Pigs invasion was about to begin. The caption from the wire service, United Press International, explains that several recruiting offices had opened in the city, where volunteers signed up to fight against Fidel Castro's government in Cuba. Many of the men were Cuban exiles who had fled the revolution, and the invasion force was launched from Central America two days later, on April 17 itself. The photograph shows how exile communities in Florida became the staging ground for an operation planned with U.S. backing.
