Miami's Cuban exile community packed its churches on October 23, 1962, the day after President Kennedy announced the naval quarantine of Cuba, when parishioners gathered to pray for the success of the American stand against the Soviet missiles being installed on the island. The photograph is a United Press International telephoto transmitted to New York newspapers, a format that let wire pictures reach print within hours. Many of the Cubans in Miami had fled Fidel Castro's government in the early 1960s, so the services carried both religious and political weight for a community that feared a superpower confrontation could decide its homeland's future.
