Taken in New York on August 8, 1961, this print is one of several images the International Rescue Committee used to show its work with Cuban families who had left the island after Fidel Castro's revolution took power in 1959. Many arrivals in those years came with little more than what they could carry, and resettlement agencies in the United States helped them find housing, jobs, schooling and language support. The subject list tags the image for both refugees and families, so it documents the people behind the agency's public relations effort. Its value to researchers lies in showing how relief groups presented exile to the American public during the early 1960s.
