Cane cutting was the daily core of Cuba's sugar economy in the early twentieth century, and this c1904 view by the Detroit Photographic Company shows the work at ground level, with laborers swinging machetes through the stalks. The Detroit Photographic Company, known for its color-tinted views sold to American buyers, produced many scenes of the island after the Spanish-American War, when American capital and attention flowed heavily into Cuban sugar. Cutters worked long hours in the harvest season, and the cane they cleared was hauled to mills called centrales. The print is a useful record of the manual labor that powered that boom.
