Few posters from the 1890s promise a squad of genuine Cuban insurgents alongside a circus parade, yet this Buffalo Bill's Wild West sheet, lithographed by the Courier Litho Company of Buffalo, New York, does just that. Dated to about 1898, it reflects the season when the show billed itself as a Congress of Rough Riders of the World, riding on the attention of the Spanish-American War. The gallery's focus on Theodore Roosevelt connects the poster to that same year, when Roosevelt's volunteer cavalry fought up San Juan Hill in Cuba, and Buffalo Bill quickly built that fresh wartime story into his performances.
