Trains carrying the Rough Riders and their horses unloaded at Tampa in May 1898, and this stereograph captures the railroad yard as men and animals came off the cars. The regiment, the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, had been raised for the Spanish-American War, and Tampa served as its staging ground while the army gathered for the invasion of Cuba. Theodore Roosevelt, who had left his post as assistant secretary of the Navy to join the volunteers, was the regiment's lieutenant colonel. Stereo cards like this one brought images of the mobilization to a public eager for war news.
