Roosevelt's Rough Riders, the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, are shown here coming off the train at Tampa, Florida, in 1898, with men and horses being unloaded at the railroad facilities. Tampa was the staging ground for the U.S. Army's expedition to Cuba during the Spanish-American War, and thousands of volunteers and regulars passed through its rail yards that summer. The stereograph was copyrighted by photographer B.L. Singley, and its paired card format was meant to give viewers a three-dimensional look at the crowded scene. The regiment's time in Tampa was short but busy, with cramped railcars, makeshift corrals, and the logistics of moving horses by rail.
