Drawn by W.J. Glackens, who later became a member of the Ashcan School, this wood engraving titled *The Fight for Santiago* ran in *McClure's Magazine* in October 1898. It shows the campaign against Santiago de Cuba, the Spanish port on the island's southeast coast, where U.S. forces and the Spanish navy clashed in July 1898 before Spain surrendered the city. Magazine illustrations of the war were usually based on sketches made near the front, so the print offers a correspondent's view of a conflict that filled American newspapers and periodicals that year.
