Remedios, a town in central Cuba, is the setting here, and the stereo card labels its subjects as refugees, the people the Spanish authorities had forced into reconcentration zones. Under Governor-General Valeriano Weyler in 1896 and 1897, rural Cubans were moved into fortified towns to cut off support for the insurgents, and disease and hunger killed many of them. The card was published by Strohmeyer & Wyman, a New York firm that sold stereographs to American audiences, and it was made around 1899, after the war had ended and as the United States was taking a central role in Cuban affairs. The record's details come from the caption card and have not been independently verified.
