Titled "The great market of Havana," this view was printed on a stereo card, a format built to be seen through a hand viewer, which gave the crowded scene a sense of depth. It dates to around 1899, when Cuba was moving from Spanish rule to American occupation after the Spanish-American War of 1898. Markets like this one were the everyday center of city life, where food, goods, and people pressed together in close quarters, and photographers of the period often turned to them to show commerce in a foreign port. The density of figures and merchandise packed into the frame is worth a close look.
