Punta Gorda, photographed looking east, shows two 15 cm siege howitzers, which set this view apart from other pictures of the same post. The photograph dates to between 1898 and 1899, when American forces occupied Cuba after the Spanish-American War and built defenses at several ports, including the Cienfuegos area where Punta Gorda lies. Guns of this kind were meant to cover harbor approaches against naval attack, and the scene reflects the Army's effort to make the island's coastline defensible. The caption card is unverified, so the exact placement and date are worth reading with some caution.
