This photograph shows Hotchkiss guns set up to protect the mine fields at Socapa, a coastal position in Cuba. After the Spanish-American War ended in 1898, the United States Army occupied the island and worked to secure its harbors and coastal approaches, often adapting existing Spanish fortifications for American use. Hotchkiss guns were quick-firing light artillery, well suited to repelling small craft that might approach defensive minefields. The image is dated only approximately, to between 1898 and 1899, so it offers a useful glimpse of early American military presence in Cuba.
