Punta Gorda, a headland on the southern coast of Cuba, is the focus of this view looking west over its defensive works. The U.S. Army built and held coastal fortifications across Cuba after the Spanish-American War ended in 1898, when American forces occupied the island while its political future was being settled. Coast artillery emplacements like these were meant to guard harbors against naval attack, and they reflect the strategic importance Washington placed on Cuban ports in the years following the war. The record's date range of 1898 to 1899 places the scene during that occupation.
