Matanzas, a port city on Cuba's north coast about 60 miles east of Havana, is the setting here, with the city hall pictured across its central plaza. The view dates to around 1904, a few years after Spanish colonial rule ended in 1898 and the island moved through US military administration toward independence as a republic in 1902. Photographs of civic buildings seen from the square were common at the time and show how public architecture was used to express order and a new national identity. The city was known in the nineteenth century for its cultural life, which earned it the nickname "Athens of Cuba.
