A hotel sign reading "Grand Hotel" along the left edge of this 8 x 10 inch glass negative helps place the view of Plaza la Libertad in Matanzas, a port city on Cuba's north coast. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold many of its views as postcards and travel prints, dates the image to about 1904, a few years after the Spanish-American War had drawn American business and attention to the island. Matanzas, often called the "Athens of Cuba" for its theaters, literary life and musicians, was also a busy center for sugar shipping. The open square and surrounding buildings show how such civic spaces served as gathering places for residents and visitors alike.
