Plaza La Libertad in Matanzas, a port city on Cuba's north coast, is shown here as it looked around 1904, when the Detroit Photographic Company was issuing views of Cuban towns for American buyers. Matanzas was known for its theaters, literary life, and the nearby Yumurí valley, which drew visitors from abroad. The photograph's value lies in its record of a public square in the early years after Spanish rule ended and American influence grew on the island.
