Morro Castle stands on a rocky headland at the mouth of Havana harbor, and this near view brings its thick stone walls and lighthouse close enough to show their scale. Spain began the fort in the late 1500s to guard the harbor against pirates and rival fleets, and it served as a major Spanish stronghold for centuries. By 1909, Cuba had been an independent republic for only a few years, and the castle had become a popular subject for travel photographers. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm that produced views of places around the world, made pictures like this one for visitors and armchair travelers.
