The flag going up over Havana on January 1, 1899, marks the day Spanish rule of the city ended and American military government began. The Treaty of Paris, signed in December 1898 after the Spanish-American War, ended Spain's claim to Cuba, and the United States occupied the island until a Cuban republic was established in 1902. Issued as a stereograph by the New York firm Strohmeyer & Wyman, the card was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the scene a sense of depth for home audiences following news of the war and its aftermath.
