A stereograph titled as a group of "typical Cuban Negros" near Havana, this card reflects the racial stereotyping common in commercial views of the period, and its caption wording should be read in that light. The record's cemetery tag is unverified, so the setting is best treated with caution. Strohmeyer & Wyman, a New York firm, issued such cards around 1899, when American interest in Cuba was high after the Spanish-American War and stereoviews brought distant places into parlors. Its aim was to present a type rather than document named individuals.
