Few churches in the Americas carry a stranger claim than the building shown here, which was known as the Columbus Cathedral because the remains of Christopher Columbus rested inside it during the 1890s. Outside, the street life is ordinary: horse-drawn wagons and a group of men stand in the open, a reminder that Havana's streets still ran on animal power. The cathedral's Baroque facade dates to construction the Jesuits began in the 1700s. The picture was made in the final years of Spanish rule over Cuba, when the island's capital was a busy port.
