Two men with baskets of produce make this picture stand out from the many Havana street scenes on the board, since its subject is ordinary food sellers rather than architecture or monuments. The print comes from the Detroit Photographic Company, which issued a large run of stereo and mounted views of Cuba, Mexico and other places around 1900 to 1910, when American interest in the island was high following the Spanish-American War and the U.S. occupation that came after it. Street vendors like these carried fresh vegetables from farms outside the city into its crowded neighborhoods, and photographs of them offered American viewers a glimpse of everyday market life in a city that had recently become a focus of U.S. attention.
