A uniformed rider on horseback is the focus of this c1904 view of Havana, a figure who would have been a familiar presence on the city's busy streets in the early years of the Cuban republic. Cuba had gained formal independence in 1902 after the Spanish-American War and a period of American military administration, and the police forces of that era were shaping how public order looked in the capital. Mounted officers were useful for patrolling crowded avenues and plazas, so the image also captures the everyday life of a city in transition.
