This wide view takes in Havana's harbor, the working waterfront that made the city Spain's most important port in the Caribbean. The print was issued by Russell Bros., a photography firm in Anniston, Alabama, which sold souvenir views to American buyers. It dates to about 1899, a year after the Spanish-American War ended Spanish colonial rule in Cuba and as United States forces occupied the island. Pictures like this one show a city in transition, with its harbor fortifications and shipping still central to its life.
